FGPC OC Steering Clinic Series

Class Limit: 24
Cost: $50 for two sessions
Format: 2 Sessions: Classroom (Sunday, May 17) + On-Water (Sunday, May 31)
Prerequisite: Session 1 is required for participation in Session 2

Session 1: Theory & Navigation (Classroom)

• Date: Sunday, May 17
• Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm
• Location: Multimedia Room, FGPC Waterfront Fitness
• Instructor: Erik Ages, Marcus Krieger

This first session introduces participants to the fundamentals of waterway navigation and steering safety through a structured classroom session. Designed for both experienced sterns and those new to steering, this session provides a comprehensive overview of the knowledge required to safely and effectively steer an OC6 on the Gorge Waterway.

Participants will leave with a strong understanding of the responsibilities and decision-making required from seat 6, along with practical tools they can apply on the water.

• Rigging and equipment checks
• Onboard safety considerations
• Crew & Trip Safety
• Roles and responsibilities of the steersperson
• Navigation, Weather & Hazards
• Reading conditions and “tell-tales”
• Understanding local waterways (Victoria Harbour)
• Steering Technique Fundamentals

Note: Completion of Session 1 is required to participate in the on-water session.

Session 2: On-Water Practical

• Date: Sunday, May 31
• Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm
• Location: FGPC Docks
• Instructors: Marcus Krieger, Patrick Linden, Matt Tancon

This on-water session builds on the concepts introduced in Session 1, giving participants hands-on experience steering under the guidance of experienced coaches. Participants will rotate through the steers position and apply key techniques in real conditions.

Session Focus:

• Basic steering strokes (poke, draw, pry, paddle strokes)
• Maintaining course and correcting line
• Starts, turns, and stopping the canoe
• Reading water and adjusting to conditions
• Communication with crew
• Steering in group and race scenarios
